By Dr Paul Bundi Human beings are endowed with remarkable resilience, which can only be broken when they choose to give up. Says Viktor Frankl in his seminal book, Man's Search for Meaning; ''it is a peculiarity of man that he can only live by looking to the future-sub specie aeternitatis. And this is his salvation in thd most difficult moments of his existence, although he sometimes has to force his mind to the task.'' Man's life is primarily driven by the desire for future, the unshakable belief that the future holds promise. We invariably cease to live when we think we have hit a dead end, or that there's nothing more to be had by living. Theoretically, there is no limit to man's achievement, and that is what drives men to wake up and strive day after day. The opposite is spiritual, psychological death, which manifests way ahead of physical death. Lesson? Losing today doesn't mean losing always. You can lose 10 times and win the 11th time. Or, you...
The World Press Photo Exhibition is open for viewing from December 11, 2015 to January 3, 2016 at the Shifteye Gallery in Nairobi. This traveling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography and is brought to Nairobi thanks to the partnership of PAWA254 Initiative and the support of The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Shifteye Gallery has partnered as the hosting the exhibition space in Nairobi. The exhibition will be officially opened by Frans Makken, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the presence of Erik de Kruijf, representative of the World Press Photo Foundation, and Boniface Mwangi, founder of PAWA254.
This year, Lagos and Nairobi are the two African capitals having the honor to host this photographic collection. The event has been organized by PAWA254 in collaboration with Ingrid Tamborin. Ingrid Tamborin is an international consultant, specialized in international trade and social impact within the creative sector. PAWA Initiative was formally established in August 2011 as a center where diverse individuals (artists and non-artists) could join together as members and visitors to engage, learn and improve on their ideas and skills. Such collaborations would result in artistic productions that increased opportunities for their creators to build their profiles and generate income. They would also give rise to ‘artivist’ productions whose messages are channelled towards public campaigns for social change. From Monday 14 to Thursday 17 December, PAWA254 in collaboration with PAK is organizing a weeklong workshop on photojournalism for Kenyan photojournalists who are already in the industry.
“This exhibition is a celebration of photography, journalism and the freedom of speech. For the exhibition to reach its full potential, our aim is to show the winning photo stories in all major cities around the world. As the media hub for Africa, Nairobi definitely belongs on the list. We are extremely happy to be back here.”
- Erik de Kruijf, World Press Photo Foundation.
“The World Press Photo Exhibition is a chance for Kenya photojournalists to see award winning images and be inspired to enter their work for the 2015 world press competition. The master class will be a great opportunity for emerging photographers to learn and improve their photography skills. We are looking forward to seeing one of our own win the World Press Photo after this experience”
- Boniface Mwangi, Pawa254
“Photojournalism in Kenya is an up-rising scene and this is certainly a win-win collaboration that gives Kenya once more an international leading role in the African continent.”
- Ingrid Tamborin
The exhibition space design was curated by Cave, a design bureau in Kenya established in 2014.

The World Press Photo of the Year 2014

Comments on the winners by the jury:
“It is an historic time for the image… the winning image needs to be aesthetic, to have impact, and to have the potential to become iconic. This photo is aesthetically powerful, and it has humanity.”
- Michele McNally, Jury chair and director of photography and assistant managing editor of The New York Times
“World Press Photo is more interesting than being just a competition. The winning image fosters debate not only within the photo community, about who we are and where we’re going and what we’re trying to say, but also in the larger community. The images are seen and discussed by tens of thousands of people.”
- Donald Weber, Jury Member
