In an attempt to tame Majority leader Aden Duale, the Raila Odinga led opposition coalition CORD has unleashed former deputy speaker Farah Maalim to contest for the Garissa township parliamentary seat which is currently held by Aden Duale in the 2017 general elections.
The outspoken Garissa Township MP has been a thorn in the flesh of the opposition with pundits crediting him for having kept them at bay in the line of duty as the majority leader in Parliament.
In a statement by Odinga released by spokesperson Dennis Onyango on Friday, CORD disclosed the Former speaker will square it out with Duale in the coming elections for the Garissa Township slot.
“We are looking at an end of an era and begging of another. In 2017 and beyond, some credible leader will speak for the Somali and Muslim community,” read the statement by Onyango.
Farah Maalim, a redoubtable politician in his own right, is a former MP for Lagdera constituency and vied for the senatorial position for Garissa County in the last elections and narrowly lost to the incumbent Yussuf Haji.
The announcement caused a stir in the political circles, with the hash tag #TeamDuale trending for the better part of Friday, January 1. Supporters of the two leaders engaged in a fierce exchange of words on who will carry the day. Maalim’s supporters countered with #TeamFarahMaalim.
Duale served as the MP for Dujis Constituency after winning on an ODM ticket in the 2007 parliamentary elections. He however de-camped in 2013 winning the newly created Garissa Township seat on a United Republican Party – URP ticket.
He was appointed Leader of Majority of the national assembly by the ruling coalition. Many of Duale’s supporters say he has measured to the demands of his role citing his forceful defence of the central government.
While Maalim is a political bigwig and commands a good following among members of the Somali community several factors could conspire against him in his efforts to unseat Duale.
Clan loyalty is expected to play a big role in the region’s politics. Maalim’s clan – the Awliyan are known to pull surprises. In the Lagdera Parliamentary seat for example, the community does not usually re-elect the incumbent. The same is expected of the newly created Dadaab constituency.
In the last elections, they overwhelmingly voted for the incumbent Senator Yussuf Haji in favor of their own, Farah Maalim. This was partly because the strategy was to win the gubernatorial position.
A new entrant, Nasir Dolal however gave Duale a run for his money during the last elections in the constituency. He lost to the Majority leader by a small margin. Although he has since been appointed the Sub – County administrator for Dadaab, Dolal’s entry into the race will pose a challenge to Farah Maalim’s candidature. It is however not clear whether the youthful Dolal will vie again having not declared his interest so far.
Another hurdle in Farah Maalim’s way could be the tag he has already been labeled with – a ‘Raila Project’. His interest in the seat is largely seen as a strategy by Odinga to take the fight to Duale rather than an objective one by the tough talking Farah.
Traditionally, Farah Maalim is known to speak better for his constituents and Somalis at large when he was in the cold as he barks and bites effectively when not a member of the August house. This could as well keep him in the position from where he serves his people very well.
Duale on the other side seems to have created a niche for himself presenting himself as the de-facto leader of not only Garissa County but also the entire North Eastern Region. He is the current chairman of the region’s parliamentary group. Many however see him as more of a defender of the government than his people.
His position is largely seen as being closer to the Country’s big office and a gateway to a future ambition of ascending to the house on the hill. This may play to his advantage as the electorate may not wish to cut short his flourishing political journey.
Kenya is set to go to the polls in August 2017 and the political scene is already active with politicians strategizing on recapturing their positions. Odinga is believed to be the opposition’s flag bearer designate although his co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula are still in the race.
Newbies are also expected to join the race and give incumbents a run for their money.
In North Eastern, clan realignment is already taking shape with communities setting their houses in order in readiness for the selection process for all elective posts.
