I have been thinking about something that might rub some folks the wrong way. But hear me out and let us navigate this topic with graces and love.
Why is it that people who don’t identify as Christians are often the ones doing the most good in life, and caring for the least among us?
I am not talking about those who shout the loudest from pulpits or post long Bible verses online. I am talking about the quiet givers.
The doers.
The ones who show up with clean hearts, without needing applause or threatening you with hellfire.
Think of Bill Gates, a self described agnostic. He does not claim religious piety. But he is giving away over $50 billion to fight disease, poverty, and invest in African education.
Warren Buffett is not a believer. Yet, he has pledged 99% of his wealth to charity. You all know how he lives humbly.
Think of Angela Merkel. She is not a christian, but welcomed refugees while others built walls. She was one of the most revered leaders of her time.
Even Elon Musk, for all his flaws, is pushing boundaries, not because he wants heaven, but because he believes in human potential.
Now let us zoom out
Look at the Asian Tigers: Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan. Many people who live there are non-Christian. But they built strong institutions, world-class economies, and cultures that reward discipline, education, and merit.
Then look at Africa. Jesus! A continent where over 85% identify as Christian.
And yet…
We are mired in corruption.
We pray loud and vote poorly.
We attend overnight vigils, only to take bribes the next morning to elect thieves. In Kirinyaga a Christian voter will tell you “útemúcinu jeci ndÃngÃkúba mútà wakwa” (without giving me money, forget my vote)
The same Christians who preach about heaven want a bribe to give someone a job.
The same Christians rig exams, grab land, lie under oath, then tithe 10% and think they have paid off God.
Isitoshe,
Our leaders who claim to be believers, and we take their word for it, become overnight millionaires for working in the public service. No history of building a product or business. Could it be miracles?
What happened?
How did we reduce faith to ritual?
How did we become louder in prayer but weaker in principle?
Truth is, most non-believers are the ones living more Christ-like lives than those who carry His name.
And that should humble us.
Not anger us.
This is not an attack on faith.
It is a call to live it.
Because if love is the greatest commandment, then maybe the true believers are the ones who never needed a title to begin with.
Let us stop confusing religion with righteousness.
Let us stop outsourcing integrity to the afterlife.
And let us start building the kind of world we keep praying for.
May the day break
