Meru Governor Peter Munya RESPONSE TO SENATOR KIRAITU MURUNGI’S ALLEGATIONS

munyawaiguru.jpg

I have read media reports attributed to Senator Kiraitu Murungi besmirching me and my office. And I would like to respond as follows:-
Meru Senator needs to be reminded that I was elected by the residents of Meru as their Governor in the 2013 general elections. It is through their votes that I was able to be the Governor and I don’t take that for-granted. I promise to carry their dream forward by fulfilling all my electoral pledges.
In the report Senator Kiraitu Murungi is quoted as having said he regrets having supported me in 2013 general elections, which according to his distorted reasoning was a mistake. Mr. Murungi also talks of looting of development funds and that he is also baffled in seeing Kinoru Stadium into ruins.
Firstly am not surprised that it is Senator Kiraitu Murungi lamenting has he does if his recent public pronunciations are anything to go by.
Kiraitu being a lawyer should know that there exists a Penal Code, Ethics and anti-Corruption Act and other laws that address the issues he is complaining about so that if he is aware of such looting by now he should have contacted the concerned authorities.
The Kinoru stadium is currently being constructed in phases and the 1st phase is 70% complete. This is a fact Mr. Murungi would easily have, if he even cared for the truth, established by simply paying a visit to the stadium. While there he would wake up to the fact that the stadium construction is in advanced stages nearing completion.
Unfortunately, even after being elected as senator he never leaves Nairobi to see what the county government is doing on the ground as he has, with all due respect, he lost touch with reality. He only comes to Meru to abuse the Governor or fault the County Government.
Kinoru stadium is currently not complete because of persistent delays in release of equitable funds to the counties by the National Government. If Mr. Murungi is playing his rightful role under article 96(1) of the constitution by representing Meru County and protecting the interest at the National level, then the delays of all county projects including Kinoru Stadium would never have been.
I don’t think senator Kiraitu was elected to the senate by the county residents to utilize his 5 years undermining the County Government and the Governor.
Is it a mere coincidence that Senator Kiraitu Murungi eyes have just opened after three years to see that there are no developments being done just when he has fallen out with me over his unwarranted sale of ‘APK’ party and unreasonable demands from me.
Mr. Murungi should be candid enough to tell us what other motives he has.
Secondly Senator Murungi has nothing to apologize for to the Meru people. In the 2013 general election he had only one vote and assuming he voted for me I also voted for him. I did not win by one vote. I won by the many other votes voluntarily cast by the Meru residents.
I don’t think the majority of Meru voters who voted for me have asked Mr. Murungi to apologize on their behalf. If he thinks he erred let him never err again.
Mr. Murungi as Meru Senator has not been diligent enough in his duties and that is why the current proposed allocation of equitable funds to Meru County has reduced instead of increasing. Instead of fighting to safeguard the interests of Meru County he has been busy fighting for his own interests. Whenever issues pertaining funding for counties are discussed in the senate, Mr. Kiraitu has always been absent. The residents of Meru County are suffering with other Kenyans courtesy of “Anglo leasing” and “Triton” scandals, which Mr. Murungi has to date never told us what transpired.
My records as former two term Member of Parliament for Tigania East, Assistant Minister for East African Co-operation and now Meru County Governor respectively is clean. If Mr. Murungi is looking at Meru County affairs through the prism of corruption, he will definitely see corruption at the other end. And if corruption is what is motivating him to seek being a Governor, he should repent early and apologize.
But for me and County Government team, I will faithfully serve the County residents to my utmost ability and while upholding excellence, integrity, fairness and sound public finance principles.
Vying for any seat is every Kenyan’s right and I welcome Kiraitu to the ring in 2017.
Thank you
HON PETER MUNYA
GOVERNOR MERU COUNTY
