How often do you wash your towel? Some people wash once a week, while some, once a year. The towel is a fertile breeding ground for millions of microbes, especially those found on human skin and on the gut. No wonder the towel is one of the objects that facilitate fecal-oral contamination (literally connecting the two ends of the gut). Worse still, most people keep towels in the bathroom (near the toilet). Every flush of the toilet sends mist with millions of microbes, ranging from H.pylori, salmonella and other deadly bacteria and viruses. When you wash your hands ready for a meal, and dry them with your body towel, there's high chance you are directly ingesting your fecal matter, or, if in a shared lavatory, someone else's faeces. Unless cleaned well, viruses such as human papillomavirus (causes warts, anal cancer and cervical cancer) can be transmitted when towels are shared with infected individuals. So, what to do? 1. If we do away with all the 1000 nominated MCAs we immediately save Kshs 12 Billion. If we reduce the number of MPs to 200 by removing all senators, nominated MPs and women reps we cut by 50% the Ksh 28 Billion allocated to the Parliamentary Service Commission thus saving Ksh 14 Billion. Already we have now Ksh 26 Billion. We have 1.5 Million secondary school day scholars in Kenya. The total cost of a day scholar is Ksh 24,000 per student, a total cost of Ksh 36 Billion. So to provide universal, free day secondary school education in Kenya we have a deficit of only Ksh 10 Billion. Now where on earth do we get Ksh 10 Billion from? In the 2016-2017 budget we will send over Ksh 300 Billion to the counties according to the Budget Policy Statement. Lets call that what it is:-Close to a third of a trillion shillings. If we reduce the number of counties to 16, even if the cost savings is not pro rata, its not rocket science to get Ksh 10 Billion from a potential Ksh 100 Billion savings. Any additional savings can go to roads, water or elimination of jiggers in the 21st century. So what would you go for?
